Atoka Fire Department to Provide, Install Smoke Detectors to Save Lives

Posted on Thursday July 16, 2015

The Atoka Fire Department, in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal's Office, is offering free smoke detectors and installation for residents of Atoka that do not have a detector. Detectors, when properly installed and functioning, save lives by alerting to smoke and helping occupants get to safety in a fire.

A local news story reminds us today of the importance of having smoke detectors that work in every home in Atoka.   Two children and their aunt tragically died in a Memphis house fire on July 15 - all three were transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and died later at the hospital.   Reports are that there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Smoke detectors, when properly installed and working, save lives. It is entirely that simple.   According to the Red Cross, seven (7) Americans die each day from a home fire and more than thirty-five (35) suffer injuries from home fires a day.   The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), says that three (3) out of every five (5) home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors. Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half.

The Atoka Fire Department offers free smoke detector installation to those who do not have them in their home.  Smoke detectors save lives - but they can't save yours if you don't have working detectors.  Contact the Atoka Fire Department at (901) 837-5322 for more information and to schedule your free smoke detector installation.
