Atoka Announces $1.1M Grant to Build Safe Room Project
Posted on Tuesday October 16, 2012
The Town of Atoka has received a $1.1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to construct a multi-use community safe room. The 9,000 square foot facility will be able to house more than 1,300 people in an emergency and will be the new home of the Atoka PD.
The Town of Atoka was recently approved to construct a 9,000 square foot multi-use safe room to provide emergency shelter to residents in south Tipton County, Tennessee.  The facility, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Town, will be designed to withstand an earthquake and the 250 mph wind speeds of an F-4 tornado.

The Town applied for funding under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.  West Tennessee is especially susceptible to tornado activity and with the high water table, a vast majority of homes in the area do not provide basement shelter in the event of a tornado.  The facility will be designed to accommodate more than 1,300 people in an emergency and house citizens as necessary during a recovery.

While not in use for emergency purposes, the facility will be the new home of the Atoka Police Department.  The Atoka PD, which has been in rental space for more than a year, will return to the Town Hall campus and operate out of the safe room facility.  Designed with security and public safety in mind, the facility will provide additional square footage for the Atoka PD, locker room facilities and a large meeting space for the Atoka Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the public.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the acceptance of the grant at a special called meeting on Tuesday, October 16.
