Atoka to Add Curbside Recycling to Trash Service in 2018
Posted on Thursday September 14, 2017
Five years after launching residential trash collection, Atoka plans to roll out curbside recycling to customers in 2018. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen recently approved a plan to add curbside recycling while giving current customers the ability to opt-out of the program.

The Town of Atoka plans to become the first in Tipton County to offer curbside recycling service to residential trash customers.  The program, approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and scheduled to roll out in early 2018, would offer bi-weekly curbside collection for plastics, aluminum cans, newspaper and cardboard.  Collection would be completed using a 96 gallon rolling cart - similar to the receptacles currently in use for collecting trash - and all recyclable material would go in the same cart.

When the Town began providing trash service in 2013, existing residents were given the opportunity to opt-out of the trash program with the understanding that any relocation within the community or change in ownership of a utility account would require the addition of trash service.  The recycling program will be offered in a very similar way.  Current customers will receive a one-time option to decline recycling but then all future account changes and new accounts would get the recycling option as a standard.

"Over the past several years, one of the comments we consistently hear from our customers is a desire to make recycling more convenient.  We believe that we should try to meet that request and we're excited to partner with WastePro to hopefully make it happen," said Mayor Daryl Walker.

"We understand the importance of being good stewards of our environment and recycling, reusing products and reducing our land fill waste all play an important role in that stewardship.  The Town is working to make recycling easy, convenient and cost-effective for our customers - making it a true win-win for everybody," said Town Administrator Brian Koral.

A letter detailing the program and offering the opt-out option will be sent to all customers in the next few weeks.  If an acceptable number of customers cannot be secured for the recycling program, the Town and vendor may mutually agree to not offer the service.
