In an effort to protect Town infrastructure while also providing un-interrupted water and sewer service to the customers of Atoka Water, the Town has joined the statewide one-call system, Tennessee811. Tennessee811 provides utility operators an opportunity to mark utilities prior to excavation or digging by property owners, municipalities or other utility operators.

Tennessee state law mandates that no person may excavate in a street, highway, public space, a private easement of an operator or within one hundred feet (100') of the edge of the pavement of a street or highway, or demolish a building, without contacting the local one-call system. In Atoka, that now means a call to Tennessee811.

Calling Tennessee811 will notify local utility operators, including Atoka Water, of your plans to excavate. Within seventy-two (72) business hours of your call, all local utilities that participate in Tennessee811 will mark the locations of their underground infrastructure – letting you know if it is safe to dig in the area.

Calling Tennessee811 also limits your liability for damaged underground utilities. If a local utility fails to mark their underground infrastructure within the allotted time, you are not responsible for damage to those utilities when you dig.
Before you dig, you must call 811 if :
  • You are digging in a street, highway or public space
  • You are digging in an area where a utility easement is known to exist
  • You are digging within one hundred (100) feet of a road
Emergency location services are available for emergency situations where there is imminent danger to life, health or property.

While not required, the Town recommends contacting Tennessee811 whenever you plan to dig on your property. It protects the utility service to your home while also protecting you from encountering unexpected or dangerous underground utilities.
